Biography Inderbir S. Gill

Inderbir S. Gill, MD, MCh, is Chairman and Donald G. Skinner Distinguished Professor, Department of Urology at the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, where he is also Executive Director, USC Institute of Urology and Associate Dean (Clinical Innovation) for the Keck School of Medicine at USC.

Prior to this recent appointment, he was Chairman and Professor, Department of Urology at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH.
 
He completed medical school, surgery residency, and urology residency in India before moving to the USA in 1989, where he completed a 2-year fellowship in renal transplantation and renovascular surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, and a second urology residency at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in 1995.
 
He joined University of Southern California in March 2009, prior to which he was at the Cleveland Clinic for almost 12 years from 1997-2009.
 
Dr Gill has authored or co-authored over 350 peer-reviewed original scientific papers, over 50 book chapters, and 8 Text-books. He is on the editorial board of 9 urologic journals. He has been invited as visiting professor to more than 250 institutions and societies worldwide, and has performed live surgery demonstrations at over 55 centers. He was elected to the prestigious American Association of Genito-Urinary Surgeons in 2003.
 
Dr Gill has received many honors and awards. In 2005, the President of India awarded him the Dr. B. C. Roy National Award for Eminent Medical Person, the first time a physician living outside India has been selected for this singular national honor, which is not awarded annually. In 2006, he was awarded the St. Paul’s Medal by the British Urological Association (BAUS) for 2006.

This is the highest honor that can be bestowed by the BAUS. He has been named honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.  In 2006, Dr Gill was President of the 24th World Congress of Endourology and SWL, and, with his team, organized in Cleveland one of the most successful world congresses to date, with more than 1700 attendees from 62 countries.

In 2008, he was elected President, Urologic Society for Transplantation and Renal Surgery. He has been listed amongst “Best Doctors in America” for several years now. His minimally invasive team has won over 35 best paper/video awards at various annual meetings of the AUA and other urologic societies over the past 5-7 years.

Dr. Gill’s primary focus is advanced minimally invasive surgery for urologic cancers, with one of the world’s largest laparoscopic/robotic surgery experiences in approximately 3000 cases in the United States.

Widely acknowledged as the world leader in minimally invasive nephron-sparing surgery for renal cancer, he has refined the techniques of partial nephrectomy and renal cryoablation, which he and his team have now performed in over 1500 patients, the world’s largest series.

His team has one of the largest experiences with laparoscopic radical cystectomy for bladder cancer, laparoscopic/robotic radical prostatectomy, and flexible robotics, techniques in which he has many pioneering contributions.

Most recently, he and his team are leading the development of natural orifice and single-port laparoscopic surgery in urology, novel innovative concepts towards scar-free intra-abdominal surgery.
