Biography Michael L. Blute

Michael L. Blute, M.D., chair emeritus of the Department of Urology at Mayo Clinic Rochester from 1999 to 2006. He holds the academic rank of professor of urology and is recognized with the distinction of a named professorship, the Dr. Anson L. Clark Professor of Urology. Dr. Blute currently serves on the Mayo Rochester Executive Board.
 
Dr. Blute attended the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and graduated magna cum laude from Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. He completed an internship in general surgery and a residency in urologic surgery at Mayo Medical School. Throughout his training, Dr. Blute has received many awards and honors, including the Mosby Scholarship Book Award for Scholastic Excellence. He is also a past president of the Minnesota Urologic Society.
 
During his career, Dr. Blute has been funded by the National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and the American Cancer Society. Dr. Blute has served as a consultant reviewer for journals such as the Journal of Endourology, Journal of Urology, Mayo Clinic Proceedings, BJU International, New England Journal of Medicine, and Journal of American Medical Association. He is also a review editor for Seminars in Urologic Oncology.
 
Dr. Blute’s surgical practice and research interests include prostate, kidney, and bladder cancer. He specializes in urinary tract reconstruction in bladder cancer patients, and the localization and clinical significance of tumor suppressor genes in prostate cancer and minimally invasive surgery for BPH. In addition, he has considerable expertise in surgical management of GU malignancy. He has chaired the Mayo Clinic Rochester database in prostate, kidney, and bladder cancer and has numerous publications in these fields. He is internationally recognized for his contributions and leadership in the field of urologic surgery and oncology.
 
Personal interests include family, reading political and military history, and rooting for the Boston Red Sox.
